Sean Kelly is delighted to exhibit at TEFAF Fall New York in collaboration with London antiquities dealer, Charles Ede. Together, the galleries will present pairings of ancient and contemporary works in provocative dialogue with one another to explore continuity and evolution in universal themes of art spanning a period of over 5,000 years. Amongst other dynamic pairings, is a photographic self-portrait by Marina Abramović from 2009, in dialogue with a Hellenistic marble male head from the 2nd-1st century BC; a Callum Innes exposed painting from 2018, in which the act of layering and removing oil paint creates a dynamic dialogue with a Roman marble draped sculpture of Asclepius from c.100-150 AD; and a multi-layered digital photograph of musical notation, by Idris Khan,  The Old Tune, 2019, exhibited adjacent to a hieroglyphic text of an Egyptian granite stelephorous fragment of vizier Paser from the 19th Dynasty, c.1291-1213 BC. Sean Kelly gallery has participated in TEFAF New York Spring since its inception in 2017. Creative Spaces

Presented publicly for the first time as part of TEFAF Fall New York’s, Creative Spaces program will be an edition of Kehinde Wiley’s sculpture Rumors of War, 2019. A monumental version of which is currently on display in Times Square through December 1, 2019. Wiley’s work presents a powerful visual repositioning of young black men in our public consciousness while directly engaging the national conversation around controversial monuments and their role in perpetuating incomplete narratives and contemporary inequities. Following its presentation in Times Square, Rumors of War will be permanently installed on historic Arthur Ashe Boulevard in Richmond at the entrance to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, a recent acquisition to the museum’s world-class collection.

Sean Kelly will participate in a panel discussion about the representations of race, gender, and identity in the powerful new sculptures created by artists Kehinde Wiley (Rumors of War) and Wangechi Mutu (The NewOnes, will free Us), to explore what these monumental works tell us about public sculpture and its role in 2019.
