Inspired by the environmental hazards of deep-sea mining and his concern for marine ecosystems, Julian Charrière embarked on a new video installation composed of an outdoor film projection and sculptural lighthouse lens. Shown for the first time on November 15 in Playa Boca del Tule, Midnight Zone is the product of an extensive investigation into the geological history of the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone, which includes expeditions in the Pacific Ocean to Clipperton Island, the Revillagigedo Islands and the Sea of Cortez. On land, the lantern works in concert with the video projection to create an emotional link to creatures that live in a fragile marine environment that we are just beginning to understand. Ultimately, Midnight Zone raises the question if deep mining is worth the environmental cost of extraction.
