Joseph Kosuth: '(Waiting for—) Texts for Nothing,' Samuel Beckett, in play

The Sean Kelly Gallery is delighted to announce the opening of a solo exhibition of Joseph Kosuth's work at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) in Melbourne. The exhibition, titled '(Waiting for—) Texts for Nothing,' Samuel Beckett, in play, will include a new body of work alongside three historic installations. The exhibition opens on December 21, 2010 and will be on view through February 27, 2011.

The new body of work, titled '(Waiting for—) Texts for Nothing,' Samuel Beckett, in play engages with Samuel Beckett's writings with a particular focus on Waiting for Godot and Texts for Nothing. The artistic practices of both Beckett and Kosuth are deeply concerned with an exploration of meaning; through this new neon installation, Kosuth uses language from Beckett's work to visualize this conceptual conversation.

Kosuth's work has consistently explored the production and role of language and meaning within art. '(Waiting for—) Texts for Nothing,' Samuel Beckett, in play pays homage to his nearly forty year inquiry into the relation of language to art through the display of three seminal works from Kosuth's oeuvre. From the artist’s first gallery exhibition held in Los Angeles in 1969, the ACCA will display some of the artist's seminal dictionary definition works. Additionally expanding on Kosuth's career-long exploration of language is Zero & Not, an installation from Kosuth’s series of wallpapered rooms based on the writings of Sigmund Freud, and a neon installation based on James Joyce’s Ulysses.
