David Claerbout in Passing Through The Collection as an Intermediate Stop: From Monica Bonvicini to Karin Sander

From a distance, it announces itself with a barely audible siren, which gets louder and louder until the heavy train thunders loudly through the museum - at least acoustically. Through-Train: The title of the exhibition refers to the expansive, unmistakable installation cub.-bird, alex+mix 11 by the German artist Manfred Pernice (*1963 in Hildesheim) and is designed as a stopover, a snapshot of a collection in constant expansion. The form of Pernice's multi-part work suggests minimalist structures; made of pressboard, its painted surfaces are reminiscent of yellow tiles and the design of public spaces in Germany during the economic miracle years. As a new acquisition, it programmatically reflects the collection strategy at the Kunst Museum Winterthur, by deliberately transferring the historical focal points of the collection in the 1970s into the present, filling the autonomous form of late modernism with content. The acquisitions of recent years follow this approach, which consistently continue to write the collection. The aim is not to acquire individual works, but rather extensive groups of works by contemporary artists that are unique in Switzerland. The exhibition is a thank you to the numerous sponsors and patrons, including the Gallery Association and the Cultural Fund of the Canton of Zurich, but above all it is a tribute to the artists who have substantially expanded the museum's acquisitions through generous donations.

The focus of the exhibition is on sculptural, mostly expansive works and conceptual approaches, supplemented by individual drawing blocks and video installations, including groups of works by Walead Beshty, Katinka Bock, Monica Bonvicini, David Claerbout, Thea Djordjadze, Fabrice Gygi, Bethan Huws, Karin Sander and Manfred Pernice. In the form of an exhibition stopover, Durch-Zug presents a collection in motion - developed from the past with the destination future.
