From March 29 to May 18, 2025, you can admire Birdcage (2023), the new work by David Claerbout, in the Grote Kerk in Alkmaar. In this film, the internationally renowned video artist investigates how time, memory and perception shape our understanding of reality. This exhibition is free of charge.
In Birdcage you enter an idyllic garden, which is startled by an explosion. The atmosphere reflects the tension of the world we live in: from climate crisis to social discontent. How do you maintain peace in these turbulent times?
Birdcage can be seen in the high choir of the Grote Kerk Alkmaar, on a monumental LED wall of 3.5 by 4.5 meters. Like an altarpiece, it makes you reflect on major questions: how do we deal with the times we live in? Think, for example, of global warming and the endangerment of animal species.
