The »urban space« - the directly tangible urban life-world - is one of the most dazzling subjects within photographic imagery. The exhibition [SPACE] STREET. LIFE. At the 7th Triennial of Photography Hamburg 2018 PHOTOGRAPHY illuminates one of the most exciting topics of photography in the 20th and 21st century: street photography.

The exhibition comprises 52 photographic positions with more than 320 works, which in seven kaleidoscopic chapters summarize central themes of street photography: street life, crashes, public transfer, urban space, lines and signs, anonymity and alienation.

Classics of street photography such as Diane Arbus, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, William Klein and Martin Parr are presented in the exhibition together with young international positions such as Maciej Dakowicz, Mohamed Bourouissa, Ahn Jun, Doug Rickard and Harri Pälviranta. In a direct and lively dialogue, contemporary photographers encounter icons of the history of photography, revealing the variety of staging possibilities that make it possible to observe public space, both now and today.

The exhibition is made up of works by the FC Gundlach Collection, the Falckenberg Collection and numerous loans and collaborations with contemporary artists. In addition to film documentaries, a 250-page catalog publication from Kehrer Verlag with selected authors complements the exhibition.
