Alec Soth

The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA) will present From Here to There: Alec Soth’s America, the artist’s first major traveling survey in the United States, which will be on view from September 13, 2014 to January 4, 2015. This exhibition, which was organized by the Walker Art Center in Soth’s hometown of Minneapolis, explores the 15 years of Soth’s career, from 1995 to 2010. Featuring over 100 photographs, MMoCA’s exhibition includes work from several series, including, Sleeping by the Mississippi, Niagara and Broken Manual.

Unique to this exhibition of From Here to There is the inclusion of Soth’s Lothlorien Series, a group of photographs commissioned by MMoCA for the 2006 exhibition Between the Lakes: Artists Respond to Madison. The series focuses on the Lothlorien cooperative, which occupied a Tudor-style house on the southern shore of Lake Mendota.

On Saturday, September 13, 6 – 9 pm, the museum will host a conversation with their director, Stephen Fleischmann, and Soth, where they will discuss the artist’s creative process. The museum will have a screening of Somewhere to Disappear, a film that chronicles Soth’s journey across the United States for his project Broken Manual, on Friday, September 26, 7 – 8 pm. Brad Zellar, a frequent collaborator of Soth, will give a talk at the museum on Friday, October 10, 6:30 – 7 pm.
