Sean Kelly Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition, domestic acts. The exhibition will open on June 23rd and close on August 3rd.

domestic acts reflects the diversity of domestic experience, focusing on residential scenes and narratives from the ordinary and the nostalgic to the quietly sinister. "Home" brings to mind family life, sanctuary, a private world of relaxation and family values, however domestic trappings can take on a variety of powerful psychological overtones. Ominous elements creep in alluding to the darker aspects of the home, ranging from mere sibling rivalry to voyeurism and domestic violence.

Julie Roberts' watercolors of quaint country cottages from her series A Trip Down Memory Lane are at once idyllic and foreboding. In Chair and Table for Non-Human Use by Marina Abramovic a child-sized table and two chairs are elevated on quartz crystals making the ensemble inviting and unusable at the same time. Lorna Simpson's serigraph on felt panels depicts hotel room interiors that question the lines between public and private, domestic and commercial. Iran do Espírito Santo is represented by Fluorescent 1 his mediation on a fluorescent light bulb in stainless steel transforms the banal into an evocative minimalist icon. In Untitled (reserve) by Ann Hamilton a video monitor inset in a tabletop plays a DVD of a looping line slowly etched into glass.

Pia Stadtbäumer's life size sculpture of a child at play ominously conceals a toy gun. A series of coats hanging on the wall each hiding a weapon constitutes Inside Pocket by Christine Borland. Julião Sarmento's imagery is often partially or fully erased, he then draws on top of the erasure, creating fragmented and layered forms, which seem to illustrate disconcerting, mysterious acts and relationships. Cathy de Monchaux's work is embedded with symbolic references, bringing to mind the dramatic end to a romantic relationship, religion, shamanism, social taboos, Freud, Sade, Brothers Grimm, Gothic and Baroque art, but with a distinctively post-modern vision.
