Laurent Grasso: Les Oiseaux On View

Les Oiseaux, 2008. Digital video on DVD, 8 minutes, 55 seconds, looped.

Sean Kelly Gallery is delighted to announce that starting July 16 and continuing until October 10, 2010, Laurent Grasso's film Les Oiseaux will be on view at the Saint Louis Art Museum (SLAM) in Missouri as part of their New Media Series.

The museum's New Media Series features installations by living artists whose works utilize digital media to engage the audience through both film and sound. This installment of the New Media Series is curated by Tricia Y. Paik, Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art.

Filmed in Rome, Laurent Grasso's Les Oiseaux offers viewers an experience of wonder and uncertainty. Throughout the video, oddly shaped clusters of dark particles reveal themselves to be flocks of starlings flying above the Vatican skyline. The hypnotic movements of the starlings are reminiscent of charged particles in a randomly changing magnetic field.

Laurent Grasso, who lives and works in Paris, was the 2008 recipient of the Marcel Duchamp Prize. Born in France in 1972, he studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the Cooper Union School in New York City and Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. He has two major solo exhibitions opening in 2010; his show at LEEUM Samsung Museum in Korea opens on August 25th followed by a solo exhibition at Sean Kelly Gallery, which will open with an artist's reception on September 10th.
