Julião Sarmento: Una forma extrema de privacidad

The National Institute of Fine Arts of Mexico will present Julião Sarmento's first solo exhibition in the country at the Carrillo Gil Museum of Art. This major retrospective exhibition, titled Una forma extrema de privacidad (An Extreme Form of Privacy), will feature work produced between 1995 and the present, exploring key themes from Sarmento's distinguished practice. Una forma extrema de privacidad, curated by Carlos E. Palacios, will be on view from April 10 through August 4, 2013; it is accompanied by a catalogue with texts from the Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art Chrissie Iles, curator and art critic Adrian Searle, and Carlos E. Palacios.

Over the past four decades, Sarmento has developed a multi-media visual language, combining painting, sculpture, film, video, sound and installations. His work often deals with issues of complex interpersonal relationships, literature and architecture. The works selected for this exhibition focus on the concepts of memory, sexuality and the subconscious in Sarmento's oeuvre. Compelling recent works, such as the performance Cometa from 2009 and the video work Cromlech from 2010, underscore the tense, psychologically fraught and voyeuristic energy present in much of Sarmento's practice, activating an intimate relationship between the viewer and the subjects of the work.
