Sean Kelly is pleased to announce the opening of Distancias Cortas/ Close Distance, an exhibition of works by Julião Sarmento, at La Casa Encendida in Madrid, Spain. The exhibition, which was curated by writer and critic Adrian Searle, opens with a vernissage on April 2nd, 2011 and will be on view from April 3 through June 5. The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue with text written by Searle.

Distancias Cortas/ Close Distance, which includes films, sculptures, performance, drawings and paintings, highlights the ways in which Sarmento's work speaks on desire, focusing on the artist's exploration of emotional intimacy, physical closeness, psychological distance, voyeurism and the role of spectator. According to Searle, the exhibition unfolds within the individual spaces of La Casa Encendida to create what could be considered several separate exhibitions, each highlighting a type of duality at play within Sarmento's oeuvre.

Sarmento has exhibited extensively worldwide since 1979. He has been included in two Documentas and has represented Portugal in two Venice Biennales. His work is represented in public and private collections worldwide such as: The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Musée National d'Art Moderne Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, Holland; and the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo. Forthcoming in the United States in 2011 are exhibitions at the Parrish Art Museum in Southampton, New York and the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, Ohio.
