David Claerbout in KIP– Kunst in Puurs

The “Confetti” Piece  – cc Binder
David Claerbout is a leading video artist who lives and works in  Antwerp . He is a painter by training, but in his work he uses photographic and cinematic techniques. He has already exhibited in Munich, Paris, Oslo and Amsterdam.
David Claerbout is fascinated by the way we observe the world and by the functioning of our visual memory. His work explores the boundaries between  photography and film , between still and moving images, between animation and digital image manipulation. Existing photographic or cinematic material such as old black-and-white photos form the starting point. Using the latest techniques, he adds minimal movements to the original still image. Conversely, he brings video images to a halt. The passage of time is important here: by looking at Claerbout's work, the viewer becomes almost physically aware of the eternal movement of time.
