Magdiel García Almanza - Artists - Sean Kelly Gallery

Magdiel García Almanza (b. 1977, Camagüey, Cuba) is an artist recognized for his expressive, geomectric sculptures that oscillate between abstraction and figuration. Drawing from both modernist traditions and the visual lexicon of Cubism, García Almanza’s oeuvre is imbued with depth and complexity. He is a key figure in a generation of Cuban artists who emerged during the post-Soviet "Special Period," a time characterized by economic constraints and material scarcity.

This challenging context has informed an environment of ingenuity and adaptation, greatly influencing his artistic practice. The artist primarily employs reclaimed Indigenous acana wood, sourced from centuries-old colonial structures, as his material of choice. By transforming these reclaimed architectural elements, his sculptures evoke an organic warmth infused with complex narratives of Cuba's rich history. Each work captures the essence of a multitude of depictions and narratives offering a window into everyday life.

His meticulous carving technique reveal a depth of interconnected forms characterized by sensuous contours and thoughtfully composed negative spaces. The intricate surfaces of his works interact with light in a manner that generates an evolving rhythm of shadow and depth, inviting viewers into a dynamic visual dialogue. This interplay allows the sculptures to transform with each shift in perspective, creating an engaging experience steeped in curiosity and joy. The artist’s exploration of color is pivotal to his artistic expression. Each series in his body of work is marked by a distinctive color applied to facets of the wood, which enhance the emotional resonance of the sculptural forms.

These harmonious compositions and fluid geometries forge a connection with the viewer, inviting one to engage in a visual language rich with themes of hope, imagination, and human connection. García Almanza’s work bridges past and present, inspiring reflection on the richness of cultural heritage and the fundamental act of creation.

García Almanza is a graduate of the Luís Casas Romero Art School in Fine Arts. His inaugural solo exhibition with Sean Kelly Gallery, Acana, marks his New York debut. His work has been exhibited and is held in private collections internationally across The United States, Europe, and Latin America. He is the recipient of the Fidelio Ponce de León Distinction. Magdiel García Almanza lives and works in Camagüey, Cuba.
