Japan Society Gallery will present an ambitious solo exhibition of works produced by Mariko Mori over the course of the last decade, including an important light installation never before exhibited in the U.S. and a new video work. Titled
Rebirth: Recent Work by Mariko Mori, the exhibition includes nearly 35 installations, sculptures, photographs, drawings, and videos, many of which are informed by Mori’s extensive explorations of ancient cultures, including the Jōmon (14,000–300 BCE) of Japan and the Celts in Europe.
Rebirth will be on view from October 11, 2013 through January 12, 2014.
In conjunction with the exhibition, Japan Society will project
Ālaya, a digital animation by Mori, onto the façade of their building, near the United Nations headquarters, for seven nights. The gentle animation sends throbbing orb-like forms wafting upwards in a meditative, trance-like stream, their translucent spectra of color bobbing amid a bright expanse of white space. The screening marks the US premiere of the video, which was commissioned by Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo for its solo exhibition of Mori that opened on September 28, 2013.
Rebirth also features extensive related programs which are listed below; please
